This practice-based Bachelor’s thesis discusses gynecological pelvic organ prolapses and their treatment. The first part deals with a nurse’s patient education competence and characteristics of an effective patient guide. This thesis consists of the background discussion and the practical part. The practical part was carried out by creating a written guide for pelvic organ prolapse patients. The commissioner of thesis was Kanta-Häme Central Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit. The aims of the study were to develop a guidance for pelvic organ prolapse patients and promote effective patient education. The background of the thesis discusses the importance about gynecological prolapses on the pelvic floor dysfunctions. It includes discussion on the types of prolapses, risk factors, symptoms and how examinations should be carried out to diagnose prolapses. The study examines the pelvic organ prolapses prevention and different treatment options. In addition, there is discussion on the impact of prolapses on the women’s quality of life. Background information was collected from different databases and using the library of the Häme University of Applied Sciences. The requests of the commissioner and cooperation with them served as the basis for the development of the guide. The commissioner requested that the information in the guide would be presented clearly and understandably. In addition, they requested that the link between quality of life and sexuality would be highlighted. The commissioner considers that there is a need for development in nursing practises in the treatment of patients with pelvic organ prolapses. According to the commissioner, the targets for development are promotion of patients’ self-care via lifestyle changes and encouragements to discuss prolapses and their symptoms even if it feels uncomfortable. The conclusion is that awareness and self-care capabilities of prolapse patients can be improved with clear and patient-related guidance. An effective patient guide should be reliable, up-to-date and practical. The created patient guide is a clear, empathetic and informative. The commissioner is satisfied with guide. The guide will be used in the gynecology ward and clinic.
