This bachelor’s thesis examined the stories of women expecting their first child about the need for support in a maternity clinic. The aim was to find out whether the current maternity clinic system meets the clients' wishes for support. The thesis had no direct workplace connection, but it was read and commented on by a midwife-public health nurse and a family worker. The theory base defines the key concepts such as maternity clinic, mother of a first born, need for support and well-being. The thesis was a qualitative study, the research data were gathered using writings collected with Webropol. The writing request was shared on social media through an open link available for ten days. A total of 42 responses were received. The survey data were analysed using thematic analysis, and themes were identified using a data-driven approach. The results of the survey revealed six themes, namely caring encounter, pregnancy Information and monitoring, concrete baby advise, preparing for parenthood, clear guidance and birth process. The results showed that mothers' wishes for support do not always match the support they receive from the maternity clinic. In the conclusions, it was noted that previous studies have produced similar results. For decades, the maternity clinic system has needed a reform in response to the current social situation. Based on the results of the study, a model is proposed whereby a bachelor of social services would work as one of the professionals in the maternity clinic. This would help to bring early intervention and multi-professionalism more strongly to the fore.
