This thesis was commissioned by Metsä Group, and the study was carried out by interviewing harvester operators by mobile phone calls. Interviews were conducted between February and March in 2023. Metsä Group wanted to find out why there is such a variety in numbers of high stumps made by different logging companies. The theoretical background of the work describes the ways the amount of decaying wood in forests can be increased. In addition, the instructions given to the harvester operators on the promotion of the continuum of decaying wood are discussed. 20 harvester operators from six different logging companies participated in the survey. The aim was to find out the level of competence of harvester operators in relation to the making of high stumps. Additionally, the aim was to ensure the flow of information between the logging companies and the forest company Metsä Group. The survey sought to find answers to possible problems related to the making of high stumps. The total absence of broad-leaved trees is considered to be a small obstacle as the harvester operators prefer to use poor quality deciduous trees in the making of high stumps. In general, the making of high stumps by the harvester is controlled, and the reporting of the number of high stumps in the forest system is successful for the majority of operators. In individual cases, the harvester operator had forgotten to label the high stumps in the forest system. In the survey, the identification of the savings tree groups before felling could have a positive impact on both the labour load of the harvester operator and the natural management of the forest. According to the results of the survey, harvester operators carry out their work professionally in accordance with existing guidelines and certifications.
