The development project in hand is targeted to the second-degree metalwork education in Keuda Vocational College in Keski-Uusimaa region and especially to Kerava Sarviniitty unit, where the author is working as a teacher. The subject of study is the sheet metal worker education. The goal of the study is to find best solution to carry out and elaborate on-the-job training of students together with the local enterprises. Another goal is to develop education to be equivalent for the needs of enterprises. Study analyses evolving of following areas: technical facilities, theoretical teaching, ground rules of working life and on-the-job training. The frame of reference is to gather essential theoretical viewpoints as quality of vocational education and training, analyzing the learning process at work and the role of the instructor at on-the-job training to strengthen students professional skills. Study included seven enterprises, which were thoroughly chosen by their suitability. Study was performed by theme interview in local enterprises. The spokespersons of enterprises made many suggestions to improve both vocational education as training. Views of evolving on-the-job training were unanimous. The main concerns by the enterprises were the technical facilities of the students, especially the ability to use the most common welding methods as TIG, MIG / MAG and rod welding as well as the ability to operate the adjustments. There was also a wish to add CMT welding and plasma and laser welding in to curriculum. Also the ability to read technical drawings needed improving. Rules of working life – especially workers responsibilities to the employer – should be made clear to the students during the education.
