This practical thesis focuses on the issue of overweight and obesity in elementary school-aged children. Childhood obesity has increased in recent decades worldwide and poses a significant health risk. The purpose of this thesis was to create a guide for families of overweight elementary school-aged children. The goal was to provide a tool that can help families change their lifestyles and increase their professional knowledge on the topic. The thesis was commissioned by the pediatric department of Kanta-Häme Central Hospital. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on the most up-to-date research on childhood overweight and obesity, as well as the effects and consequences of lifestyle choices. Additionally, the theoretical section concentrates on family guidance from the perspective of a nurse and a public health nurse. Furthermore, to develop the practical part, the characteristics of a good guide were investigated. In the practical section of the thesis, a guide for families was created. The guide offers options for making lifestyle changes and provides a compassionate perspective for parents. The guide was designed to be suitable for the entire family, with illustrations and easy-to-read text. It will be used by professionals working in the pediatric department and can be utilized during appointments or given to families to read at home. Childhood obesity is never solely the child's responsibility, which is why the guidance in this thesis, and in the guide, is aimed at the entire family.
