This Bachelor’s Thesis was commissioned by Nokian Panimo Oy, and it focused on addressing the company’s development needs in relation to carbon dioxide capture. The goal was to investigate the benefits of implementing a carbon dioxide capture system for a small brewery from the perspective of sustainable production and economic profitability. Carbon dioxide plays a significant role in climate change and the thesis pointed out the common practice of releasing carbon dioxide produced in small brewery operations directly into the atmosphere. The objective was to demonstrate the negative environmental and economic impact of releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and thereby justify the advantages of its capture and utilization. The study applied both qualitative and quantitative research methods, with a focus on leveraging a theoretical framework derived from literature and previous research. The theory was used in calculations assessing the economic benefits of capturing carbon dioxide generated during the brewery’s ethanol fermentation process. Simultaneously, the importance of carbon dioxide capture and recycling in easing climate change was established. As a result, the thesis provided an overview of the role of carbon dioxide in the brewing industry and climate change. Additionally, cost calculations were presented to justify the economic advantages of implementing a carbon dioxide capture system in the brewery. The capture and utilization of carbon dioxide have been a vital part of larger breweries’ production chain for decades. The thesis demonstrated that due to the increase in market prices of carbon dioxide and advancements in capture technology, the profitability of carbon dioxide recycling is viable even on a smaller craft brewery scale.
